Sunshine before the storm

Well the gloom of winter has finally arrived. Although the past few weeks have been bone chilling at least the skies were clear and the sun was out. Now it seems the rain has come and we are going to be house bound for the foreseeable future.

Knowing the weather was shortly to turn, Lily and I journeyed out on Wednesday to have a lovely picnic at Hyde Park with my dear friend Aaron who is currently visiting from Sydney.

I haven't seen a lot of Aaron in the past year but I have been spoilt with his company with a couple of visits in the last month. Lily looks so little in his big arms. She loves it when he holds her above his head.

It was so lovely and warm in the sunshine - just what we needed after the chilly start to the morning. I made a quiche, which was not too bad given it was made with what ever I had in the pantry/fridge (bacon, corn, cherry tomatoes and red capsicum). Aaron supplied the cheese and biscuits, and a little wine ;). He also had a some very tasty dukkah which we enjoyed with quality olive oil and bread.

We have been on a few picnics but this was the first time Lily got to eat her own lunch outside and I must say she did a pretty good job of it!

After stuffing our faces we lazed in the sunshine and someone had a giggling fit when Mummy started tickling her tummy. Sooo cute.

We fed the ducks with our leftover bread (probably illegal but fun nonetheless). It was actually a bit scary when they all started flocking toward us hoping to get some of the crumbs. Now I know where Hitchcock's the 'The Birds' originated from!

It was so pretty in the park with the autumn leaves littering the ground. Thank you for a lovely afternoon Uncle Aaron. Looking forward to the skies clearing once more so we can venture out and about again some time.

I'm back

I'm back! Not much has been going on in my world since I last posted other than trying desperately to get Lily to sleep longer (both during the day and night). We both had a cold a few weeks ago so any progress we had made went out the window. Poor little munchkin had to have her first dose of antibiotics. What a fun time that was trying to get her to take her medicine three times a day (note the sarcasm).

I am happy to report though that things have improved markedly this week and we actually have a baby who is almost sleeping through the night!! Yay! Thank goodness as both Dave and I were looking more and more like the undead – I mean that in a loving way!

What seems to have turned it around is putting in place a routine for Lily (and me) to follow. Whilst not being overly strict with it, we are trying to have meal, nap, bath and bed time at set times during the day. She still protests when being put to bed but only for a few minutes. I also purchased a Bubbaroo sleeping bag and this may just be the secret weapon. She is now nice and warm and doesn't squirm as much in bed which I think helps her to settle easier.

The best thing about us all getting sleep is an improvement in all our temperaments. Lily seems more active and less grumpy (so does Mummy!). She is giggling more and generally being an absolute delight.

Something new happens almost daily now. She is a chatty little thing and has mastered ‘da’ and ‘ba’. Hopefully ‘ma’ isn’t too far away.

She truly brings a smile to my face every morning. Happiness = me!

Firsts

We started giving Lily some solids this week. Hmmm, success rate is low at this stage but I'm hopeful she will get more of an appetite for veggies etc as we go. She certainly loves her breast milk though as evidenced by her chubby cheeks!
We also went along to Zadie's first birthday. I met Zadie's mum Patrits nine years ago through work. We have stayed friends even though we didn't work together that long. Patrits and her husband John are gorgeous and so so trendy! I'm forever jealous of how good Patrits always looks. Zadie has definitely inherited her mum's style.

Lily was so cute at the party. She was the youngest bub there and you could see the frustration on her face as she lay still and all the other little ones where crawling/walking all over. She got to play her first party game, pass the parcel, and wasn't much into the prize but loved the paper!
It was a lovely afternoon in the sunshine. Just what we needed before the wintry weather settled in.

I'm so thankful that Lily is a happy, healthy thriving bub. Just watching a report on TV about premature babies and I can't help but get emotional. They are soooo tiny and fragile. One of my fears when pregnant was that Lily would come early. There was no basis for this and I'm sure most expectant mums are fearful of popping too soon. It is amazing what modern medicine is able to achieve, yet it would be heartbreaking not to be able to hold your baby at will.
She is growing up so fast and it seems like forever ago that she was a tiny little thing. I can hear her grizzling now as her Dad is attempting to put her to bed and I just want to go in and cuddle her and do all the things we are not 'suppose' to do! Well stuff it I say, she will only be little for a short time and if I can comfort her by giving her cuddles and holding her close then so be it. Take that Tizzy Hall.

My Place and Yours - Yellow

Well it has taken all week but I have finally tracked down some items in my house to participate in this weeks My Place and Yours theme, Yellow.

I love the yellow of the leaves in this mural on Lily's nursery wall. Surrounded by the pinks and greens the yellow leaves really pop.

The trusty rubber duckie makes an appearance each bath time and keeps our little one entertained while I give my best Ernie impersonation.

And finally I love these yellow shoes but very rarely wear them as they are a little tight. I do like to wear this colour (almost a mustard really) but I'm not sure that it suits my colouring unless I fully make myself up. Well if I need an excuse to get all dolled up I'll take it!

Pop on over to Hello Owl to see the Yellow in other people's homes.

My Place and Yours

This week the theme for My Place and Yours from over at Hello Owl is to share something that we are proud of.

There are so many things in my life that make me proud but for the sake of you all I'll narrow it down to a few (especially given my mammoth blog yesterday - was it obvious that I have been a little starved of adult conversation this week?).

Number 1 - My daughter makes me so very proud. Everyday she is becoming more and more independent as she discovers how she fits into the world. She is now able to sit on her own and we will attempt to start solids this weekend! I love that she is developing her own personality - even if it is a tad wilful (I think my mum would call that karma)!

Number 2 - I am so very proud of my partner Dave. I am proud of the relationship he has formed with his daughter. I am proud of the way he provides for our family, not just from the financial aspect but also the support and understanding he provides. I am proud that he is proud of us.

Number 3 - On a lighter note, I am proud of this antipasto platter I made for Mother's Group this week. Yummo!!

First Mother's Day

My first mother's day was spread over a number of days to make sure we didn't exhaust ourselves (I learnt that lesson from seeing my sister-in-law traipse around the countryside with a 6 week old last year!).

Last Thursday Lily and I went to visit my mum. I love getting together with my mum and seeing her interact with my daughter. The relationship that Lily already has with my mum is lovely. Mum makes funny faces and sings songs that I don't know, which Lily finds fascinating. To allow Lily the opportunity to know her nanna's voice I put mum on speaker when we have a chat on the phone. This seems to be working as you could see Lily's little eyes lit up when mum started speaking to her last week. Ahhh so lovely.

Both of my nannas passed away before I was born, therefore I unfortunately never really experienced that special relationship. That's what makes it all the more special for me to see Lily getting hugs and kisses from her nanna and creating a strong bond.

It is when we are together, and at other times with the extended family, that my heartstrings tug for the country life once more. The idea of being able to just drop into my mum's or my sister's without it being a 'planned' event is something I genuinely long for. When Wendy and Leonie (my sisters) were growing up, my mum's parents lived down the road (literally they lived on the same street) and would watch them after school some days, which I have always been very jealous of. I hope that Lily grows up with a sense of family and feels part of a pack.

It is very remiss of me but I failed to take any photos at mum's but here is a photo from a few weeks ago of Mum and Lily which I have stolen from my sister's blog (thanks Wendy xx).
So that was one mum down. On Saturday we then headed down to Safety Bay to catch up with Dave's family. The day started early for me when I finally got a chance to go to the hairdressers. It has been almost 6 months since I last went, and for a person who at one point in time was going every 6 weeks (i.e. when I was a bottle blonde) it seems like a lifetime ago. With a new darker colour and a good trim I feel half human again. Now if Lily will give me more than 3 hours continuous sleep we might be on our way to some sort of normality.

Speaking of sleep, Lily was out to it by the time we arrived to see her grandparents, but soon perked up to enjoy some time on the swings with her Dad and cousin Aidan who is 9 months older than Lily and loves showing off his two front teeth!

The sunshine was lovely but the wind coming off the water was bone chilling. I really don't like the wind and I think Lily has inherited this dislike as she became quite unsettled. We therefore decided to retire back to Dave's parent's house to enjoy some afternoon tea and take some family photos. What a dilemma to get two bubs looking at the camera when there is no-one there to make the required monkey sounds!

Lily was nonplussed when I decided to try her headband on for size!

That then left the actual day itself. Dave got up and occupied the bub while I grabbed a rare extra half hour or so of sleep. I was then treated to bacon and eggs, which always taste better when prepared by someone else! Then came present time... We celebrated an anniversary earlier in the week and Dave gave me a charm for my 'pandoraesque' bracelet and to carry the theme through, for mother's day I received a lovely big jewellery box from my two loves! Since Lily came along I must admit that I have been rather unorganised when it comes to the top of our tallboy, which houses my jewellery and our perfume/cologne collections. I'm not going to embarrass myself by posting a photo but lets just say it ain't pretty. The new box is great as it has lots of individual boxes to drop rings, necklaces etc into. I'll post some photos once I've organised it all, promise I will ;)

Later that day we went to Soda cafe for a late lunch/early dinner. Yes it is true, once you have a child you start eating at times akin to being a pensioner. Dave and I went to Soda late last year for his birthday and had one of the best meals I have ever eaten. The menu is great if you want to experiment with new tastes and textures. Saying this though, Dave and I played it safe by ordering seafood linguine and gnocchi respectively. Both dishes where so fresh and flavoursome, not too mention colourful. And I think the photos speak for themselves when it comes to taste!

I would loved to have stayed for dessert as their selection is to die for but Lily was getting restless so we came home for chocolate ice creams which we had in the freezer, can't complain about that.

Phew, reading this back it sounds exhausting, but it was truly a lovely few days filled with lots of love from family and hugs and kisses from my little girl. It is a day I will never experience again, my first mother's day, and I could not have asked for anything more. I am so thankful for all the blessings I receive everyday just being in Lily's presence. I love being a mum!

My Place and Yours

OK, so this is my first attempt at actively participating in a 'blogworld' event. Hello Owl has a weekly blog titled, 'My Place and Yours' and this week the topic is your favourite place in your home.

Whilst technically not inside my home, I would have to say this little corner of the backyard is a definite favourite spot to get some 'me' time. Whilst pregnant with Lily I would love to swing on the love-seat and read the afternoon away(maybe even take a little nap). Now when our little munchkin is unsettled I'll take her out the back and within moments the soothing swaying motion has calmed her cries. I especially love this spot in the late afternoon and when the spa going, it is my own little bit of luxury.
